Reconstruction Surgery Midface Beverly Hills
RECONSTRUCTIVE MIDFACE SURGERY AND SCAR REVISION
Virtually any lower eyelid situation that has not responded to more traditional techniques needs to be carefully assessed to determine if midface ptosis or maxillary hypoplasia are contributing to the anatomic challenges. If you have had more than one revisional surgery on the lower eyelid without obtaining the surgical result you and your surgeon had hoped for, you will benefit from a consultation with Dr. Kenneth Steinsapir, world-renowned oculofacial surgeon whose private practice is located in Beverly Hills, California.
The lower eyelid is structurally linked to the midface region, which is why many lower eyelid problems can be improved with midface surgery. Maxillary hypoplasia is an underdevelopment of the bones in the upper jaw, which can create a sunken midface appearance and contribute to under eye hollows and poor support for the lower eyelid. Even relative maxillary hypoplasia with mild weakness at the top of the cheek can contribute to the so called “negative vector” lower eyelid. When lower eyelid abnormalities are the result of midface ptosis (sagging, drooping) or maxillary hypoplasia, surgery that targets only the eyelid and canthal regions will not produce optimal results. Dr. Steinsapir has pioneered innovative new surgical approaches for managing these issues and has published and lectured on these methods extensively.
Dr. Steinsapir was elected as a Fellow to the prestigious American Society for Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, one of about 500 members worldwide. He is a board certified Ophthalmologist, as well as an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the prestigious Jules Stein Eye Institute at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Steinsapir is frequently called upon to address persistent aesthetic issues pertaining to the eye and midface region. Patients travel from all over the world to consult with Dr. Steinsapir, in order to improve upon the results of a previous facial surgery, or simply to benefit from Dr. Steinsapir’s technical efficiency, surgical excellence, and clinical precision.
SCAR REVISION
The initial repair of a facial laceration is often performed under less than ideal conditions. Tissue swelling can compromise the alignment of the tissues even when the repair was performed by a specialist (i.e. plastic surgeon, facial plastic surgeon, or eye plastic surgeon). Optimal scar revision results are generally best achieved by delaying the procedure for 6-12 months after the initial repair. This allows the body to heal naturally and helps to ensure a more accurate picture of the necessary revisions. An exception to this rule is if it is immediately evident that the reapproximation of the wound edges is inaccurate, meaning the edges of the wound do not fit together tightly.
Scar revision surgery is an outpatient procedure that can often be performed under local anesthesia with or without sedation. The procedure typically involves excising the old scar tissue using individually designed tissue rearrangement and carefully using magnification to reapproximate the tissue edges. Sutures are removed within one week, and patients can expect that the revised scar will be more visibly prominent while it is healing. During the wound healing process over the next several months, the redness will subside as the wound matures. This scar revision technique is very effective for highly visible scars. A personal consultation with Dr. Steinsapir will determine if the scar you are concerned with will benefit from scar revision.
