Is your phone having trouble recognizing your face?

Published on January 18, 2018

An innocent affair

Your love affair with fillers might have started innocently enough. A little Voluma here, a squirt of Juvederm there…year after year. Hyaluronic acid fillers are naturally occurring sugar gels that are cross-linked to provide long-term facial volume. They revolutionized how we stay in the game without surgery. One day it dawns on you: something is not right. Perhaps you caught a glimpse of yourself in a bathroom mirror with harsh lighting. It might be a candid moment captured in a group photo. Call it the “New, New Face,” or the “Uncanny Valley.” You realize that your face doesn’t look young. In fact, it doesn’t look like you at all. How could this happen? Is it time for surgery?

Confused?

You’re not alone. Many cosmetic surgeons and physicians have embraced fillers and Botox services. Have you been told that fillers last about 6 to 9 months? Initially, you most likely loved the effect of a new injection. As predicted, there comes a time when the fillers just don’t seem to be doing the job. What you may not know is that these fillers last much, much longer than 6 to 9 months. Products can and do persist for years after injection before ultimately breaking down. You loose track of these fillers and so does your doctor.

What happens to these fillers?

They contribute to general facial volume filling up the nooks and crannies of the face in a way that does not look youthful or natural. Superimposing a fresh treatment on an old service does not fix the problem. So-called smooth fillers like Voluma, Juvederm, Belotero, Restylane Silk, Refyne, and Defyne are prone to drifting after they have been placed. In the business, these are known as low G prime, high tan delta fillers. Drift of these fillers and their persistence are the basis for the unsatisfactory changes to your face.

The solution

The first step is recognition by an expert cosmetic surgeon with an aesthetic eye to determine where you have accumulated these products.   The beauty of hyaluronic acid fillers is they can be removed with the injectable enzyme Hyaluronidase. This includes unhelpful volume. The results are often dramatic and almost immediate. Deflating dysfunctional facial volume often takes years off the appearance. After enzyme treatment, the face is allowed to settle for about a week. Fresh hyaluronic acid filler may be needed at this point to achieve the best possible result.
